BEST TIME TO VISIT
White Sands National Park operates under unique hours, which means it isn’t accessible 24 hours like some other national parks. The park’s gates open at 7 am and close between 6 pm – 9 pm depending on the season.
The only way to remain in the park outside the park hours is to apply for an Early Entry or Stay Late permit or backcountry camping. There are ten primitive backcountry camping sites available on a first-come-first-serve basis and it can only be reserved in person.
Late summer/early fall (September – November) is considered the best time to visit the park. You’ll encounter fewer crowds and mild weather. Winter and Spring (December – May) are also great options if you don’t mind cooler temperatures.
WEDDING PERMITS
If you are planning a minimalistic ceremony with just an officiant or a small group of close friends and family, you don’t need a permit, but if you are planning a larger ceremony, with more guests and props (decorations, and furniture) you will need one. You can submit a request up to six months in advance ( recommended due to the high number of applications each year).

Many couples opt for charcuterie boards, but if you want to think outside the box, you cook your own meal or hire a personal chef to do that for you while you relax and soak in the moment. It’s important to know that no glass or alcohol is allowed, so you will have to think of alternatives, maybe a sparkling juice or nonalcoholic beverage.
